The economic - ecological - energy evaluation
A retreaded tyre provides almost the same performance as a new one at a price that is on average at least 40% lower. All this generates an advantage for the consumer who benefits from immediate savings but also spread over time, since a good carcass can be retreaded more than once, thus generating an important reduction in the tyre’s cost per kilometre. A transport company can cover more than 500,000 km with the same tyre retreaded several times.
In addition to the savings for users, there are also savings for the country as a whole. Retreading recovers approximately 77% of the tyre's original materials. According to AIRP studies, for every 100,000 retreads Italy saves: 29 million litres of petroleum, 5,000 tonnes of other strategic raw materials such as natural and synthetic rubber, carbon black, textile fibres, steel and copper, the emission of 2,700 tonnes of CO2 and the disposal of 6,500 tonnes of end-of-life tyres (ELTs).
Each year in the European Union the replacement of car tyres produces more than 300 million tyres to be disposed of, plus several million more from end-of-life vehicles. The problem of their impact on the environment is very serious: it takes about 100 years for a tyre released into the environment to deteriorate completely. Retreaded tyres reduce the production of waste.
Tyre retreading is a perfect example of circular economy, offering the following savings compared to the production of a new tyre:
